The Nigerian government announced on Thursday that Cesarean Sections (C-sections) will now be offered free of charge to all women in need.

This initiative is part of a broader effort to lower Nigeria’s maternal mortality rate.

Muhammad Pate, Coordinating Minister of Health and Social Welfare, shared the news during a three-day Nigeria Health Sector-Wide Joint Annual Review in Abuja.

Pate described the program as a significant step towards reducing maternal and newborn deaths across the country. He emphasized that no woman should lose her life due to financial barriers to essential care.

The Federal Ministry of Health and Social Welfare confirmed the development in a post on X (formerly Twitter), stating: “In a powerful move, Coordinating Minister @muhammadpate just announced that Cesarean Sections for all Nigerian women who need them will now be FREE!”
