Chelsea Football Club have successfully reached an agreement with Premier League rivals Brighton to sign goalkeeper Robert Sanchez. The deal is reported to be worth £25 million ($32 million) with potential add-ons, making it a substantial investment for the Blues.
Sanchez, who temporarily lost his starting position to Jason Steele during the latter part of the previous season, will now provide healthy competition for Chelsea’s goalkeeper, Kepa Arrizabalaga. This acquisition comes as a response to the departure of Edouard Mendy, who moved to Saudi Arabian club Al-Ahli.
The 25-year-old Spain international had previously worked with Chelsea’s goalkeeping coach, Ben Roberts, during his time at Brighton. Roberts, who joined Stamford Bridge in September 2022, is likely to play a crucial role in Sanchez’s integration into the Chelsea squad.
Under the guidance of newly-appointed manager Mauricio Pochettino, Chelsea is making significant changes to its roster following an underwhelming Premier League season, marking the club’s worst performance in almost three decades. The acquisition of Sanchez is part of Pochettino’s efforts to strengthen the team and achieve improved results in the upcoming season.
In addition to securing Sanchez, Chelsea have also been linked with Brighton’s talented midfielder, Moises Caicedo. However, the Seagulls are reportedly demanding a hefty fee of £100 million for the Ecuadorian international.
