Chelsea vs Servette: Marc Guiu makes ‘Miss of the Season’ in Europa Conference League blunder
Chelsea’s young striker Marc Guiu has been at the center of social media buzz for all the wrong reasons after a glaring miss in their Europa Conference League play-off match against Servette.
In the first leg of the play-off held at Stamford Bridge on Thursday evening, Chelsea secured a 2-0 victory over the Swiss side. However, Guiu’s miss has become the talk of the game, with many labeling it the ‘miss of the season’.
The Blues’ first half was marred by frustration, as the match remained goalless and the team was booed off the pitch.
The second half saw Christopher Nkunku break the deadlock with a penalty. But Chelsea should have been 2-0 up shortly after if not for Guiu’s astonishing miss.
The 18-year-old, who joined Chelsea from Barcelona this summer for £5 million, had an open goal after intercepting a goalkick from Servette’s goalkeeper Jeremy Frick.
With Frick scrambling back to his line, Guiu seemed destined to score his first goal for Chelsea. Yet, his shot was blocked by the recovering goalkeeper. Guiu’s follow-up attempts were also thwarted, leaving the Stamford Bridge crowd and viewers in disbelief.
Social media exploded with reactions, with one user remarking, “Marc Guiu with a miss of the season contender just two games into the 2024/25 season.”
Another fan commented, “Marc Guiu with the miss of the season and we are only 2 weeks in.”
The miss has intensified calls from Chelsea fans for the club to consider signing another striker, with discussions around potential moves for Armando Broja to Ipswich and Romelu Lukaku to Serie A.
Despite the blunder, Chelsea eventually doubled their lead through Noni Madueke later in the second half. The Blues will face Servette again next Thursday for the second leg, aiming to advance to the group stage of the competition.
