The Anambra Police Command has issued a statement on the incident involving a young lady, Chinyere Awuda, whose body was found in an abandoned swimming pool at Cosmila Hotel in Awka. The Command’s spokesperson, Tochukwu Ikenga, clarified that the lady was not beaten to death, contrary to initial allegations.
According to the statement, a pathologist’s examination revealed no signs of trauma on the deceased’s body. Instead, the autopsy report indicated that the cause of death was drowning.
The incident was initially linked to an event held at the hotel the night before, where the lady was accused of stealing some of the Naira notes that were sprayed on the celebrant.
The celebrant was subsequently taken into custody for questioning, and the deceased’s body was recovered and transferred to the morgue for the autopsy.
Further investigation supported the pathologist’s findings, indicating that the lady had attempted to escape when confronted, and her whereabouts were unknown until her body was discovered in the pool. It is believed that she accidentally fell into the abandoned pool and drowned.
In light of these findings, the Commissioner of Police, Aderemi Adeoye, has instructed that the case file be forwarded to the Attorney General for vetting and legal advice.
The police have provided this update to clarify the circumstances surrounding the tragic incident and to ensure accurate information is available to the public.
