During the trial at an Ikeja High Court yesterday, Michael Adeniran, the father of the deceased Whitney Adeniran, revealed that Whitney had already passed away before being taken to the hospital by the management of Chrisland Schools. Adeniran, who is the first prosecution witness, shared this information during cross-examination by the school’s counsel, Bolaji Ayorinde (SAN).

Adeniran informed Justice Oyindamola Ogala that the school nurse had informed him that Whitney’s eyes had dilated, but the nurse could not confirm her death as she was not a doctor. The testimony was part of the ongoing trial of Chrisland School, Opebi, over the alleged death of Whitney. The school, along with other defendants, faces charges of involuntary manslaughter and reckless and negligent acts.

The incident took place on February 9, 2023, during the school’s inter-house sports activities held at Agege Stadium, where Whitney was allegedly electrocuted. Adeniran confirmed that Whitney had been absent from school on February 2, 2023, due to an illness. However, he emphasized that despite the absence, his daughter was not ill.

He recounted that on January 20, 2023, the school had informed his wife that Whitney was unwell. As a result, Whitney was taken to Inland Specialist Hospital in Ikeja, where the doctor prescribed Nitrazepam 5mg and Amitriptyline 12.5mg. Adeniran obtained the names of the drugs from the doctor’s report issued on February 16, 2023.

When questioned about the cause of Whitney’s death by Agege Central Hospital and Diagnostic Limited, Adeniran confirmed that he was informed she died of cardiac arrest. However, he couldn’t recall being informed about the administration of oxygen or whether the school nurse mentioned applying cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) on Whitney.

The trial was adjourned until January 24 for further proceedings.
