Colombia kick-start WWC campaign with 2-0 win over South Korea

Colombia emerged victorious with a 2-0 win over South Korea in Group H Women’s World Cup in Sydney. The match showcased fast-paced, physical action, with Colombia seizing the opportunity from a penalty and a goalkeeper error, leaving the South Koreans to rue their missed chances.

The game started with South Korea dominating the first 15 minutes, but a high boot challenge just 10 minutes in resulted in a yellow card for Colombian defender Manuela Vanegas. However, it was Colombia who struck first in the 28th minute when a shot in the box hit Shim Seo-Yeon’s hand, leading to a penalty. Catalina Usme, Colombia’s all-time top goal scorer, confidently converted the spot-kick, sending the goalkeeper the wrong way and putting her team ahead.

Boosted by the goal, Colombia continued their pressing attack, and their efforts paid off just eight minutes later. Real Madrid’s 18-year-old Linda Caicedo capitalized on a mistake from the South Korean goalkeeper, as her shot from outside the box slipped through the hands of Yoon Young-Guel and into the net.

Despite the South Koreans’ determination, they struggled to break through Colombia’s defense. Their biggest chance of the first half came when Geum-Min Lee’s open header was expertly saved by Colombian goalkeeper Catalina Perez.

The match also witnessed a historic moment when South Korean teenager Casey Phair, aged just 16, became the youngest woman to play in the World Cup.

With this victory, Colombia secured second place in their group, trailing behind Germany, who recorded an impressive 6-0 win over Morocco in Melbourne.
