Commissioner serving under Ortom remanded in prison over murder of Wilfred Tondo

Benue State Commissioner for Arts and Culture Hon. Sekav Dzua Iortyom has been remanded in prison custody. The remand order was issued by a Chief Magistrate Court presided over by Mrs Felicia Ikyegh and sitting in Makurdi.

The Commissioner was alleged to have earlier jumped police bail in October, 2016. He was however rearrested on Monday, shortly after attending an emergency State Executive Council meeting in government house.
He was yesterday charged for criminal conspiracy, culpable homicide and disobedience to an order.

The Commissioner was among those charged for the murder of a University lecturer, Mr Aondosoo Tondo, of University of Mkar.

According to the First Information Report, FIR, Sekav was fingered in the death of the lecturer who was killed in August, 11, 2016 and was invited by police for interrogation, given administrative bail but which he was accused of jumping.

“During Police investigation Kosovenyi Kungwa, Emmanuel Nyajo and Hon. David Yiman were arrested and charged to Chief Magistrate court 1, Makurdi while Hon. Sekav Iortyom (commissioner) who was given administrative bail and appointed to report to the police on October, 25 2016 but failed.’

At the mention of the case yesterday no plea was taken for want of jurisdiction, but the defense counsel, Mr. Christian Teeve, entered an oral plea for the bail of the accused.
However the prosecuting officer Inspector Gabriel Agbadu opposed plea on the ground that investigation into the matter was still ongoing.

In her ruling, the presiding Chief Magistrate, Mrs. Felicia Ikyegh who directed that the bail plea be put down in writing and made formally ordered that the accused be remanded at the Makurdi Medium Prison and adjourned the matter to February 9th., 2017 for further mention.

It will be recalled that three persons including Buruku local government boss were earlier prosecuted and remanded in Makurdi prison in October 25, 2016 by chief magistrate court 1 in connection with the death of the University lecturer.

Though the trio had been granted bail by federal high court Makurdi last Wednesday.
