Controversy as Benue Assembly sacks Chief Judge, Justice Ikpambwese

The Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) has condemned the removal of Benue State Chief Judge, Justice Maurice Ikpambwese, calling it unconstitutional.
IDOMA VOICE reports that the Benue State House of Assembly on Tuesday passed a resolution directing Governor Hyacinth Alia to remove Justice Ikpambwese over allegations of financial mismanagement.
In a statement signed by its President, Afam Osigwe (SAN), the NBA insisted that the removal of a Chief Judge must strictly follow constitutional provisions.
“Any deviation from this process is a direct affront to the rule of law and poses a significant threat to our democracy,” Osigwe stated.
The association criticized the Assembly’s resolution, emphasizing that judicial independence must be protected. Osigwe argued that the House lacked the authority to recommend the Chief Judge’s removal without the involvement of the National Judicial Council (NJC).
“It is laughable for any State House of Assembly to believe it has the power to recommend the removal of a Chief Judge without the NJC’s involvement,” he said.
He urged the lawmakers to reverse their decision and respect due process, calling on security agencies to protect Justice Ikpambwese from harassment or intimidation.
“The NBA calls on all elected officials to desist from unconstitutional actions that threaten judicial integrity. Law enforcement agencies must ensure that Justice Ikpambwese is not hindered from performing his duties.
“We urge the Benue State House of Assembly to immediately rescind its unconstitutional decision and follow the proper channels through the NJC. This show of shame must stop,” he added.
