Tensions escalated in the Nigerian Senate as a cloud of controversy loomed over the screening of Festus Keyamo, a ministerial nominee. The Chamber was thrown into chaos, prompting the Senate leader, Senator Bamidele Opeyemi, to move a motion to dissolve the session into an executive session.
Before the pandemonium, Keyamo was invited to address the Chamber, where he was expected to present his profile and state reasons why he should be considered as a Minister of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.
However, the situation took a dramatic turn when Senator Darlington Nwokocha, representing Abia Central Senatorial District, raised a point of order. He brought to the Senate’s attention alleged infractions by Keyamo against the Constitution of Nigeria during his tenure as the Minister of State for Employment, Labour, and Productivity.
In particular, Senator Nwokocha highlighted how the nominee purportedly obstructed the Reps Committee’s oversight function regarding the sum of N52 billion allocated to his Ministry.
