Court adjourns Nnamdi Kanu’s trial till January 27

The Federal High Court in Abuja has fixed January 27, 2021 for continuation of the trial of Nnamdi Kanu, leader of the proscribed Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB).

The case was earlier fixed for hearing on Thursday, November 26, but was adjourned due to the late service of hearing notice.

Nnaemeka Ejiofor, the Federal Government’s lawyer, told the court that the defense counsel, Ifeanyi Ejiofor who was supposed to appear for the IPOB leader in his absentia received the hearing notice on November 24, thereby making it impossible for him to meet up with the trial.

The trial of four others who are also standing trial alongside Nnamdi Kanu was also adjourned until January 27 due to their absence in court.

The four defendants, Bright Chimezie, Chidiebere Onwudiwe, Benjamin Madubugwu and David Nwawuisi, are standing trial on alleged treasonable felony, improper importation of goods and illegal possession of firearms.o

Their counsel, F.K Kamagan, E. Ejiofor and Maxwell Opara all told the court that their clients were absent in court because they were out of Abuja and they received information of the new date on Nov. 25.

A hearing notice from the court scheduled the case for November 26 which five prosecution witnesses were listed to testify against Kanu.

The trial Judge, Justice Binta Nyako hereby adjourned the two cases to January 27, 2021, for hearing, and warned that the court would not entertain flimsy excuses on the proposed date.

Kanu is standing trial for charges bordering on alleged treasonable felony filed against him in response to years of the campaign for the Independent Republic of Biafra through IPOB.
