Court remands three masquerades in Nsukka prison over attack on youth

A Magistrate Court in Nsukka, Enugu State, on Thursday ordered the remand of three Oriokpa masquerades in prison custody for allegedly assaulting a young man along Aku Road Market in Nsukka.
The incident, which occurred on Sunday, reportedly involved the masquerades violating a prior directive that restricted their public appearances. During the outing, the trio allegedly attacked an unsuspecting man, leaving him with serious injuries.
The accused, traditionally revered and commonly referred to as “spirits” due to their cultural significance, were arrested by a Joint Task Force (JTF) made up of the Nkpunanano Task Force and operatives of the Nigeria Police Force.
According to sources, the suspects were initially slated to be remanded while still dressed in their full masquerade costumes. However, in a surprising display of leniency, the presiding magistrate allowed them to change out of their traditional regalia before being taken to the Nsukka Correctional Centre.
The court has adjourned the case until October 7, 2025, for further hearing, while the three accused remain in custody.
