COVID 19: South Africa officially enters second wave of coronavirus

South Africa has officially entered the second wave of COVID 19 as the number of infections exceeds 6,000 per day, the country’s health minister declared on Wednesday.

Most of the new cases were detected in the Southern parts of the country, including Cape Town.

“The increases are shown in about six of the provinces and that is why it is important to recognise this is a second wave, Health Minister Zwelini Mkhize said in a televised address.

Mkhize disclosed that South Africa has the highest recorded cases of the Coronavirus in Africa with over 828,000 cases and more than 22,500 deaths.

Latest statistics showed that the age distribution of new cases in the last few days peaked in those who are between 15-19 years.

The spike in infections among these demographics is believed to have been fuelled by a series of “super spreader” end of the year parties where school students took alcohol and flouted Covid 19 guidelines of social distancing and wearing of face masks.
