PDP raises alarm over alleged unauthorised voter registration in Cross River

The Cross River State chapter of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has accused individuals allegedly linked to the state government of conducting an unauthorised voter registration exercise at the Dan Archibong Lodge inside the Government House in Calabar.

In a statement issued on Thursday and signed by the party’s Publicity Secretary, Prince Mike Ojisi, the PDP described the alleged activity as a threat to the credibility of the electoral process and called for an immediate probe by relevant authorities.

The opposition party urged the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), the Inspector-General of Police (IGP), the Department of State Services (DSS), and other security agencies to investigate the claim, establish those involved and prosecute anyone found to have violated electoral laws.

The PDP warned that any illegal or fraudulent voter registration exercise could weaken public trust in elections and undermine the integrity of future democratic processes.

The party reaffirmed its support for free, fair and transparent elections, while urging residents of Cross River State to remain calm and vigilant as authorities look into the matter.

Attempts to get a response from the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) in the state were unsuccessful. Calls and messages sent to APC Chairman Chris Eta were not answered at the time of filing the report.

However, Fred Abua, Press Secretary to the Deputy Governor of Cross River State, dismissed the allegation, saying he was unaware of any such activity.

“I don’t know what you’re talking about. Nothing of such is taking place,” Abua said.
