Suspected cultists have brutally beheaded a notorious member of a rival cult leader at Eke Awka Market in Awka South Local Government Area of Anambra State on Wednesday morning.

The victim, identified as Igwe Omeli, was known to be a prominent leader of a rival cult group in the area and was allegedly involved in collecting levies on behalf of certain market leaders.

Eyewitnesses reported that the attack occurred around 7 a.m. while traders were opening their shops for the day’s business. Mr. Omeli got into a heated dispute with members of another cult group, leading to a violent confrontation. Despite attempting to call for help from his gang members, they did not arrive in time to assist him.

In a horrifying act of violence, the attackers beheaded Mr. Omeli and mutilated his body before fleeing the scene, taking his severed head with them.

The incident sent shockwaves of fear and confusion among traders in the market, prompting many to abruptly close their shops in anticipation of possible reprisal attacks.

Anambra State Police spokesperson, Tochukwu Ikenga, confirmed the incident and stated that the police had secured the crime scene. Preliminary investigations suggest that the attack is linked to an ongoing cult conflict. The police are actively conducting further inquiries, and witnesses are providing crucial information to aid in the apprehension of the perpetrators. However, the specific detail about the attackers taking the victim’s head has not been officially confirmed by the police.
