The death toll from the tragic tanker explosion in Jigawa State has risen to 105, with 70 people now reported injured. The incident occurred on Wednesday in Taura Local Government Area.
Initial reports indicated that 94 people had lost their lives, with 50 others sustaining injuries.
However, updated figures from Jigawa State Police Command spokesman, DSP Lawan Shiisu Adam, confirmed the increased casualties.
“Unfortunately, villagers attempted to scoop petrol from the drainage, resulting in a flame that engulfed the area and many people were reportedly perished.”
The explosion was caused by petrol leaking from a tanker into a gutter. Villagers attempting to scoop the petrol from the drainage ignited a flame, leading to the deadly blaze.
Authorities have evacuated the 105 bodies, and the injured have been taken to Ringim and Hadejia General Hospitals for treatment. The fire was successfully extinguished with the help of police officers, firefighters, and local residents.
