In response to a statement made by Twitter influencer Daniel Regha concerning the arrest of 100 individuals suspected of homosexuality in Warri, Delta state, the Delta State Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), DSP Bright Edafe, has emphasized that cross-dressing is not deemed an offense in Nigeria.
The Delta State Police Command apprehended 100 individuals during a same-sex wedding event held at a Warri hotel on a recent Tuesday. In light of this incident, Regha expressed the opinion that prominent crossdressers like Bobrisky and James Brown should also face arrest as a deterrent.
Regha stated, “Bobrisky, James Brown, Eni & others who champion cross-dressing are still walking free. Until these people are prosecuted, many will continue to emulate. Arresting 100 cross-dressers in Delta is one thing, but why ignore their mentors? The police should make an example of ’em.”
DSP Bright Edafe, addressing Regha’s comments, clarified that those arrested were detained for their involvement in ‘conducting and attending’ a same-sex wedding ceremony, rather than for cross-dressing. Edafe pointed out, “Daniel, get your facts right. They were not arrested for cross-dressing; they were arrested for conducting and attending a gay wedding ceremony. Bring a part of the law that stipulates punishment for cross-dressing or categorise it as an offence.”
By setting the record straight on the specific reasons behind the arrests, the Delta State Police Public Relations Officer aimed to dispel any misconceptions and provide accurate information regarding the situation.
