Delta police inspector lynched by mob in front of wife, children

A mob, suspected to be Fulani Okada riders in Ogwashi-Uku, Aniocha South Local Government Area of Delta State, killed a 45-year-old police inspector named Festus Onori. The unfortunate incident occurred while Inspector Onori was on his way to church with his wife and three children on a Sunday.

The incident unfolded when a commercial motorcyclist, believed to be of Fulani origin, collided with Inspector Onori’s vehicle from behind in Okpanam. After the minor accident, Inspector Onori parked his vehicle a short distance away to ensure the safety of the Okada rider and passenger. However, over 20 men armed with sticks and clubs pursued him, prompting him to retreat into his car.

In an attempt to escape the pursuing mob, Inspector Onori drove away, but the Okada riders continued their chase and their numbers grew. He diverted through a different road, hoping to deter them, but they persisted and followed him to Ogwashi-Uku Community and further along the Ogwashi-Uku-Kwale expressway until his vehicle ran out of fuel.

Tragically, the mob overpowered him and lynched him in the presence of his wife and three children. They also destroyed his vehicle. A passerby later transported the injured Inspector Onori to Ogwashi-Uku police station, where he was confirmed dead.

Inspector Onori served as an Inspector at Marine Police Station Cable Point Asaba. The wife of the deceased reported that the Okada rider and passenger involved in the initial accident did not sustain any injuries.

The Police Public Relations Officer of Delta State Command, DSP Bright Edafe, stated that he had not received official information regarding the incident and therefore could not comment on the matter.
