DHQ confirms Federal approval for US–Nigeria air strikes in North-West
The Defence Headquarters (DHQ) has verified that the recent coordinated air operations by Nigerian and United States forces targeting ISIS fighters in North-West Nigeria were undertaken with due authorisation from relevant Federal Government authorities.
The confirmation was made on Friday by the Director of Defence Information (DDI), Major General Samaila Uba, through a statement titled “Armed Forces of Nigeria in Conjunction with the United States Conducts Precision Strikes Against Foreign ISIS Elements in North-West Nigeria.
Major General Uba explained that the mission was part of sustained, collaborative efforts to dismantle terrorist cells and other criminal networks that pose grave risks to Nigeria’s national security.
He noted that the air strikes were carried out on the basis of reliable intelligence and after extensive operational planning, with the objective of substantially weakening the capacity of the targeted terrorists while limiting collateral damage.
According to him, the joint action reflects the determination of the Federal Government of Nigeria, working alongside key international partners, to tackle transnational terrorism and stop foreign militants from gaining or expanding operational bases within the country.
The DDI further restated the firm resolve of the Armed Forces of Nigeria to safeguard lives and property, emphasising that the military remains committed to joint, inter-agency and international collaborations aimed at achieving sustainable peace nationwide.
“The Armed Forces of Nigeria reiterates its unwavering commitment to protecting lives and property and to supporting joint and inter-agency efforts aimed at restoring lasting peace and security across all parts of the country,” the statement concluded.
