DHQ orders removal of illegal checkpoints across Nigeria

The Defence Headquarters has issued a fresh directive mandating the immediate dismantling of all non-essential roadblocks and unauthorised security checkpoints across major highways in the country, following growing worries about inefficiency and mounting security vulnerabilities.

The order, conveyed through a memo dated December 5 and endorsed by Brigadier General A. Rabiu on behalf of the Minister of Defence, Christopher Musa, cautioned that the increasing number of unauthorised checkpoints is obstructing free movement and exposing troops to needless risks.

According to the memo, “In view of the foregoing, I am directed to respectfully convey that the services Headquarters hereby instructs all TCS/FCs to ensure the immediate dismantling of the non-essential static roadblocks and unauthorised checkpoints within their respective JOA.”

The document stressed that although safeguarding the highways remains a priority, the uncontrolled rise of static checkpoints within various Joint Operations Areas (JOA) is beginning to hinder military operations and create delays for both civilians and personnel.

The affected corridors include major routes such as Abuja–Lokoja–Ajaokuta–Idah–Otukpa–Obollo Afor–Enugu; Abuja–Lokoja–Obajana–Kabba–Omuo–Ekiti–Ikole Ekiti; Abuja–Lokoja–Okene–Okpella–Auchi–Benin; Abuja–Kaduna–Kano; and Lagos–Ore–Benin–Asaba–Niger Bridge.

Instead of fixed posts, the DHQ directive noted that troops will now adopt enhanced mobility strategies, relying heavily on intensified patrols and intelligence-driven operations to secure critical routes.

The memo further stated, “Commanders are further to ensure strict compliance with the approved control point locations and maintain only those essential for operational, security purposes and dominate the expanses of routes with aggressive mobile patrols and human intelligence gathering.”
