Dickson Akoh makes another shocking revelation about Nigeria Peace Corps
The National commandant of the Nigeria Peace Corps, Amb Dickson Akor has affirmed that he was optimistic that President Muhammadu Buhari would assent the bill of the organization into law in no distant time.
According to Akoh, Buhari who had during his electioneering campaign promised to tackle the issue of unemployment amongst youth would do justice to the bill, which had earlier gotten the nods of both the red and green chambers respectively.
VISION FM reports that process of establishing the corps got another boost on Thursday when the both chambers of the National Assembly consolidated the Nigerian Peace Corps Bill.
For the sake of harmonizing it for the assent of the President, the National Assembly therefore set up a conference committee of both chambers to fine tune the Bill.
While laying the report on the Consolidated Bill at the House of Representatives, the Chairman of Committee on Interior, Hon. Jagaba Adams Jagaba said the joint “committee met in conference on Thursday, 8, 2016 and harmonised the two versions of the Bill”.
Hon. Jagaba said the Bill seeks to, among other things, “empower, develop and provide alternative empowerment for the youths, to facilitate Peace, Community Services and nation-building”.
In the harmonised version of the Bill which is now refered to as ‘Nigerian Peace Corps Bill’, the Officers of the establishment shall be known as Nigerian Peace Corps with the National Commandant as the head.
The Bill also stipulates that intending officers must obtain enrolment form from their respective commands and undergo compulsory 4 weeks orientation exercise.
Speaking yesterday at a press conference shortly after the senate consolidated the bill, the visibly elated Akoh said he was grateful to the upper chamber of the national assembly for the speedy passage of the bill and eventual consolidation.
He stressed that the harmonized report has finally laid to rest all the unnecessary controversy bodering on which organisation’s bill hat was passed by the national assembly in 2016.
His words, “The consolidated report approved by the House today has brought to conculsion all legislative process. Thus, the Nigeria Peace Corps Bill is now ripe and ready to be transmitted to President Muhammadu Buhari for his assent.
“In view of this significant millstone in the history of this organization on behalf of the entire officers and men of the Peace Corps of Nigeria and the Nigerian Youths as a whole, I wish to express our profound gratitude to the leadership of the entire members of the national assembly for their sense of patriotism, high sense of justice and confidence reposed in this organization,” he said.
When asked what he would do if the president failed to assent the bill, highly optimistic Akoh said.
“I am very optimistic. I started Peace Corps at age 18 and I have never for once being pessimistic about anything. So I don’t think I would think towards that direction. I am happy that President Buhari during his electioneering campaign promised to look into youth unemployment and this is a good avenue to tackle that menace. So I strongly believe that he would do justice to the bill just like the national assembly has done,” the Idoma-born Peace Ambassador said.
He further called on his team members to exercise patience while waiting on President Buhari’s final nod, which would herald the final take off of the organization.
