Former Chelsea midfielder John Obi Mikel has opened up about his ex-teammate Didier Drogba’s unique approach to football during their shared tenure at Stamford Bridge.
Mikel, the former Super Eagles captain, disclosed on the ObiOne Podcast that Drogba, one of the most celebrated strikers of his time, exhibited distinctive behavior, especially in relation to high-profile matches.
Mikel revealed that Drogba displayed a particular fondness for significant fixtures and was noticeably less enthusiastic about engagements with smaller clubs, such as those in the FA Cup or encounters against teams like Stoke.
Despite this, the Ivory Coast legend’s prowess on the field was unquestionable, having scored 104 goals and provided 64 assists during his illustrious stint with Chelsea.
“Drogba loves the big games; he was a guy who enjoyed it,” stated Obi Mikel. “For him, it was the big games. The big games were what he lived for—the Champions League nights, Manchester United and Liverpool, that’s where you see a Didier Drogba.”
Mikel further delved into Drogba’s mindset, noting that the Ivorian striker thrived on the challenge and attention associated with these high-stakes encounters. Describing his teammate’s demeanor leading up to such games, Mikel emphasized the palpable shift in Drogba’s mood and engagement.
“From that week, on a Monday leading up to the weekend on Saturday, you can see his mood, you can feel that he’s engaged. He wants those games; he wants the challenge because he knows that the manager will turn on him because the manager will say that he will win the game for us,” Mikel explained.
He added a unique perspective, likening Drogba’s demeanor to that of a woman, stating, “He loves a little bit of attention; Didier behaves like a woman. You pamper him, give him a lot of attention, and he produces. But he was always there for us in the big games.”
