Tragedy struck on Monday as 18 people were burned to death in a horrific accident involving a white Toyota Hiace bus on the Ijebu-Ode/Benin Expressway.
The incident occurred around 3:30 p.m. near RCC yard, leaving the driver critically injured.
According to Traffic Compliance and Enforcement Agency (TRACE) spokesperson Babatunde Akinbiyi, the bus burst into flames after a keg of petrol inside the vehicle spilled onto the exhaust pipe.
The keg fell due to the bus hitting a failed section of the road, causing the vehicle to ignite.
Akinbiyi reported that the driver, who survived the crash, was taken to Rona Hospital for treatment, while the deceased were transported to the State Hospital in Ijebu-Ode.
He urged drivers to avoid carrying petrol in their vehicles to prevent such dangerous situations.
