The Commissioner of Police in Lagos State, CP Fayoade Adegoke, has emphatically stated that no police officer is authorized to search the phones of Nigerian citizens. Adegoke outlined the proper procedure during his visit to Melody FM, 107.7FM, in Lagos, clarifying that if an officer harbors suspicions, the appropriate action is to take the suspect to the cyber section of the police station.

Addressing concerns about police misconduct, the CP urged citizens to report any grievances directly to their respective Divisional Police Officers (DPO) or Area Commanders. If dissatisfied with the resolution, individuals are encouraged to report directly to him, providing an open line of communication with Lagosians.

CP Adegoke emphasized the importance of respecting citizens’ rights and treating them with decency, acknowledging that the public plays a crucial role as the government’s employers through tax contributions.

“No police officer has the right to beat citizens. The people are the government’s employers; your taxes support us. Thus, we have to treat you with the appropriate decency,” stated Adegoke.

He added that no officer is permitted to search the phones of individuals on the spot. Instead, if there are suspicions, the proper protocol involves taking the person to the police station, where the cyber department is equipped to handle such matters.
