Dorcas Mseer: Blind Benue student duped, cries to Ortom, wife for help

The chances of a 21-year-old blind student of Special School for Exceptional Students Aliade in Gwer East local government area of Benue state, Miss Dorcas Mseer to register for this year’s WAEC and NECO examinations are slim as a conman allegedly duped her of N134,500 in Gboko.

She said her life at the moment is in jeopardy, calling governor Samuel Ortom, his wife and other well meaning people of goodwill to come to her aide to register for examinations and secure employment for a living.
Narrating her ordeal to our correspondent in Makurdi on Wednesday, Dorcas who hails from Ushongo local government area, said she left home to withdraw money from her Union Bank account in Gboko before proceeding to school in Aliade for registration.

She said, given her bad eye status, she opted for a good Nigerian to assist in the withdrawal by giving both the ATM and the secret pin code to the man by which he successfully carried out the transaction.
According to her, after the transaction, rather than return her ATM card, the ‘helper’ swapped it with an expired one which she took and left the bank to school.
The SS3 student who said the incident took place on 2nd December, 2021, pointed out that while in school, she started receiving messages into her telephone and on getting her mates to read it out, was told to her amazement that it was debit alerts from the bank.

“It was discovered that the ‘yahoo’, ‘yahoo’ boy went to a POS in Gboko and had withdrawn money in my account to the tune of N143,500. This money was savings from farm produce.”

“At the moment, I’m at the risk of missing registration for WAEC, NECO and payment of school fees. I’m calling for help from all corners.”
Miss Dorcas Mseer said, even as an orphan with physically challenged status, she intends to study Special Education at tertiary institution of learning with the aid of spirited persons.

A lawyer and activist, Barr Antaav Kume who is following the matter, posited that he got to know about the incident a couple of weeks ago and is trying hard for the victim to register for the two examination bodies and pay her school fees.
Barr Kume noted with concern that the victim is an orphan and a girl child, trying to earn education, he called on the government to give her a job as encouragement.
Efforts to contact the Police Public Relations Officer for Benue state police command, Superintendent of Police, Sewuese Anene proved unsuccessful.
