A Bulgarian top-tier football club has issued an apology after mistakenly holding a minute’s silence for a former player who is still alive.
Arda Kardzhali paid tribute to Petko Ganchev ahead of their league match against Levski Sofia on Sunday, with both teams standing in a solemn moment at the centre circle in his supposed memory.
However, before the final whistle, the club realized the error and posted a statement on Facebook admitting they had been misinformed about Ganchev’s passing.
“The management of PFC Arda extends a sincere apology to former player Petko Ganchev and his family after the club received incorrect information regarding his death,” the statement read.
“We wish Petko Ganchev many more years of good health and hope he continues to enjoy Arda’s success.”
