Drama as Total filling station attendants allegedly force customers to by meat pies to buy fuel

TotalEnergies in Nigeria has pledged to launch an inquiry into a viral video depicting attendants at a Total filling station in Igando, Lagos, allegedly compelling customers to purchase meat pies before being permitted to purchase petrol.

In the video, circulated widely and observed by SaharaReporters, a customer expresses frustration over the station’s insistence that they buy a meat pie as a prerequisite for fuel purchase.

“I’m baffled by what’s happening at this Total filling station. How can I be required to purchase a meat pie before I can buy fuel? What kind of absurdity is this? Is this establishment operating as a bakery or a fuel station?” voiced one of the customers.

“This Total filling station is playing games with the public,” they added.

SaharaReporters also noted that the video gained traction on social media platforms as many Nigerians expressed their discontent with the incident.

Numerous netizens labeled it as insensitive to the challenges faced by Nigerians amidst the nationwide fuel scarcity.

A Twitter user, Salihu, remarked, “Nigerians are currently purchasing fuel at prices ranging between N700 and N1200, even at official rates. And yet, there’s a petrol attendant at Total Filling Station insisting people buy meat pie first before selling fuel.”

“So, if I intended to buy N10,000 worth of fuel from Total Filling Station, would I have to purchase a N500 meat pie along with N9,500 worth of fuel?” added another user, Bibiire.

Upon contacting the company’s customer care line for a response to the viral video, a representative named Moses criticized the actions of the attendants.

He stated, “We are unaware of the situation. However, the actions described are unacceptable and contrary to our company’s policies. We would appreciate receiving the video and assure you that we will initiate a thorough investigation into the matter.”
