A petroleum tanker driver and his accompanying apprentice lost their lives in an accident in Ibadan, the capital of Oyo State. According to DAILY POST, whose names have not been released, the tragedy unfolded when the tanker carrying Premium Motor Spirit (PMS), also known as petrol, exploded.
The accident took place in the early hours of Tuesday near the Total Filling Station at Orita Challenge, Ibadan. Reports indicate that a brake failure occurred while the driver was navigating a roundabout, causing the tanker to hit a concrete barrier, somersault, and ultimately catch fire.
Mr. Yemi Akinyinka, General Manager of the Oyo State Fire Service, confirmed the incident. He explained that the fire was reported at 05:01 on Tuesday, 4th March 2025, and that ACFS Olubunmi Christy led a team of fire personnel to the scene.
On arrival, the responders found the tanker collapsing in front of the petrol station. They quickly applied a foam chemical compound, bringing the blaze under control.
The burnt driver and apprentice were recovered, handed over to the FRSC, and transported to the hospital for further management. Additionally, personnel from Sumal Food Limited assisted with cooling operations to ensure that the fire was completely extinguished.
