A magistrate’s court sitting in Oshogbo, Osun State, on Friday ordered that a 32-year-old commercial driver, Jemilu Lawal, be remanded in Correctional Center for allegedly killing an immigration officer, Ojo Peter while driving on a highway.
Police prosecutor, Inspector Jacob Akintunde, dragged Jemilu before the court on eight counts of dangerous driving, the killing of an immigration officer, damaging of properties, driving without driver’s license, and expired documents.
He said: “The defendant who resided in Sabo Angua, Katsina State on February, 22nd 2021 at about 9:30 am at Salam Salam Islamic Center, along Ife/Ibadan Expressway, Gbongan, Osun State while driving a commercial bus with registration number, KTN 448 XQ drove dangerously and killed one Ojo Peter an Immigration officer who was attached to Oyo Command.
“He damaged the one Toyota Previa bus of one Olawuyi Kayode. The defendant also drove without driver licence, expired roadworthiness, vehicle licence, and other documents.”
Akintunde noted that the offence committed contravened section 18 of Cap 146 Vol.II Laws of Osun of Nigeria 2002 and section 18, RTA Cap 548 laws of Nigeria. 2002.
However, the defendant pleaded not guilty to the charge preferred against him.
The defence counsel, Mr. Remidus Nwgu, made an oral bail application for his client on the most liberal term.
The presiding magistrate, Olusegun Ayilara, ordered the defendant remand and adjourned the matter till March 3, 2021, for ruling on bail.
