Edo election: Nyesom Wike under fire
Asue Ighodalo, the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) candidate for the upcoming governorship election in Edo State, has said that the decision on who will succeed Governor Godwin Obaseki rests solely with the people of Edo State.
Ighodalo made this assertion during an appearance on Channels Television’s Politics Today programme on Monday.
Ighodalo’s remarks come in response to comments made by Governor Nyesom Wike of Rivers State, who recently announced that he would not support Ighodalo, the PDP’s chosen candidate.
Wike criticized the support he previously extended to Obaseki, stating, “I told them (Obaseki and Ighodalo) that I am not going to support you, nor am I going to support anybody. The one I supported, it never helped anything. Rather I was insulted.”
In response, Ighodalo rejected Wike’s position, suggesting that Wike’s stance might have evolved and asserting that the ultimate decision lies with Edo State voters.
“It’s incorrect to say that Wike will not support us,” Ighodalo stated.
“If he has changed his mind, so be it. The choice of who becomes the next governor of Edo State is for the Edo State people to make. It’s not the decision of anyone else, whether a former governor or a minister.”
Ighodalo reiterated his belief in the power of the electorate, stressing that only the citizens and residents of Edo State with PVCs will determine the outcome of the election, with divine support guiding their decision.
