A whooping N58 billion ($153m) and 80 houses have been recovered from former petroleum minister, Diezani Alison-Madueke, by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC.
This was disclosed by the anti-graft agency chairman, Abdulrasheed Bawa, in the April edition of the EFCC magazine, EFCC Alert.
He stated that the commission is trying to get Madueke repatriated from the United Kingdom (UK) where she has been residing since 2014.
“There are several cases surrounding that. As you may have read, I was part of that investigation, and we have done quite a lot. In one of the cases, we recovered $153 million; we have secured the final forfeiture of over 80 properties in Nigeria valued at about $80 million.
“We have done quite a bit on that. The other cases as it relates to the $115 million INEC bribery as the media has sensationalised it, is also ongoing across the federation,” Bawa said.
The EFCC boss, however, pointed out that prosecuting the former minister for alleged corruption is still far from reality since she was out of Nigeria’s jurisdiction.
He noted that despite the challenges associated with repatriating Diezani to face charges in the country, the case against her has not been abandoned.
The EFCC boss stated:
“We are looking forward to the time when we will, maybe, have her in the country, and of course, review things and see what will happen going forward. The case has certainly not been abandoned.”
