In the words of William Shakespeare, “When beggars die, there are no comets seen, but the heavens themselves blaze forth the death of princes.”
Such was the departure of Elder Pius Ogaba Oche, a man whose transition from this earthly realm was not a quiet event, but a grand departure that seemed to capture the attention of the heavens themselves.
Born 83 years ago into the humble embrace of Mr. and Mrs. Ogaba Oche of Ikpilogwu Clan, Elder Pius emerged as a beacon of integrity and progress for the Agila nation, Benue State, and Nigeria as a whole.
To some, he was a paragon of wisdom, to others, an exemplar of administrative prowess, yet to the wider community, he was synonymous with progress, setting the pace and blazing trails that others could only aspire to follow.
On December 2, 2023, Elder Pius embarked on his final journey, leaving behind a legacy that resonates to this day.
His impact was felt far and wide, evidenced by the outpouring of tributes from a diverse array of individuals and institutions.
From his early education to his distinguished career in various governmental agencies and educational institutions, Elder Pius’s journey was marked by a steadfast dedication to learning and a passion for teaching.
His commitment to his community was unwavering, as seen in his advocacy for the establishment of Ado LGA and the nurturing of Apa Community Secondary School.
On February 9, 2024, people from all walks of life converged in Apa-Agila to bid a final adieu to the sage of Ado.
Elder Ogaba’s journey homeward commenced from the Army Command and NAOWA Hospital, Abuja.
Accompanied by a procession of over 100 motorcades, Pa Oche paused briefly at the Loko-Oweto bridge, marking the boundary between Nasarawa and Abuja—a familiar route he traversed for the last time.
The cortege made a brief stopover at his GRA residence in Otukpo, providing a moment of quiet repose before continuing its journey to his ultimate resting place in Apa, Ado.
Upon reaching his ancestral home, emotions ran high as mourners and admirers alike gathered to celebrate the life and legacy of Elder Pius Ogaba Oche.
The evening of his arrival in Apa transformed into a celebration of his life, with entertainers paying tribute to his exemplary life.
The following morning, his remains were conveyed to the church for a solemn service.
As the service drew to a close, emotions ran high as Papa was laid to rest, surrounded by loved ones and admirers.
It was a time fraught with emotion, as the widow and chief mourner, Mama Gloria Oyidu Oche, alongside his son, Rt. Hon. James Oche and his siblings watched as the undertakers from Apams Funeral Undertakers gently lowered the deceased into the waiting grave.
In his heartfelt tribute, his son, Rt. Hon. James Oche, depicted his father as a man of profound understanding and commitment.
Senator Abba Moro and other dignitaries at the burial paid glowing tributes to Elder Pius’s dedication to the service of Benue State, echoing the sentiments of all who knew him.
For Elder Pius Ogaba Oche, it is the end of an era, but his legacy lives on in the hearts of those he touched.
He may have left us, but his story lingers on, woven into the lives of others.
