‘Emilokan’ can’t win elections in Edo – Obaseki dares Tinubu, Shaibu

Governor Godwin Obaseki of Edo State has unequivocally dismissed the ‘Emilokan’ slogan as a viable electoral strategy within the state, signaling a departure from the political narrative that gained attention during President Bola Tinubu’s presidential campaign. Speaking at a gathering of leaders from the Edo South Senatorial District at the Government House, Governor Obaseki underscored the need for a more effective approach to engage the electorate.

The ‘Emilokan’ catchphrase, which prominently featured in President Bola Tinubu’s campaign, appeared to fall short of resonating with Edo State’s populace according to Governor Obaseki. He declared, “Edo people will not accept ‘Emilokan’ as a strategy in government as they are not known for that. For us, it is the people that will decide.” This assertion pointed to the significance of local sentiments and preferences in shaping political discourse.

Governor Obaseki’s address extended beyond the critique of the slogan. He also emphasized the imperative of timing and unity in governance, advising against actions that could destabilize the government machinery. The governor stated, “The timetable for the election is not out. You can’t be part of a government and also be the one to destabilize the same government.”

In a veiled reference to recent events, Governor Obaseki urged those with political aspirations to exercise prudence and respect for the existing administrative cohesion. “I thought we came together and will leave together,” he emphasized, calling for a unified approach that prioritizes the collective achievements of the administration over individual ambitions.

While Governor Obaseki did not explicitly mention names, his remarks appeared to resonate with the ongoing legal tussle involving his deputy, Philip Shaibu. The deputy governor had taken legal action against Governor Obaseki, seeking to forestall his removal from office. The legal dispute ensued following allegations by Governor Obaseki that Shaibu had manipulated youth council elections to further his own gubernatorial ambitions.

The governor’s message reinforced the importance of pursuing political aspirations through legitimate channels and within the framework of harmonious governance. His words underlined the delicate balance between ambition and the shared responsibilities of public service.
