In anticipation of Emirates Airlines resuming flight operations to Nigeria next Tuesday, the Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Mr. Festus Keyamo, has successfully negotiated an agreement granting reciprocal rights that will enable Nigerian airlines to initiate direct flights to the United Arab Emirates (UAE).

A statement from Mr. Tunde Moshood, Special Assistant on Media and Communications to Keyamo, highlighted that the minister led a delegation to the UAE to finalize the negotiations for Emirates’ return. This meeting laid the groundwork for a new Bilateral Air Service Agreement (BASA) between the two nations.

The statement read: “The Honourable Minister, accompanied by his technical team, engaged in constructive discussions with UAE aviation authorities to facilitate the smooth reintroduction of Emirates Airlines into Nigerian airspace next Tuesday. The new BASA, a key topic of discussion, aims to enhance collaboration and establish guidelines for the evolving relationship between the two countries in the aviation sector.

“Importantly, the negotiations resulted in a landmark agreement on reciprocal rights, ensuring Nigerian airlines will soon have the opportunity to begin direct flights to the UAE. This development is significant for Nigeria’s aviation industry, as it expands international connectivity and provides more travel options between the two nations.

“Commenting on the meeting’s outcome, Festus Keyamo stated: ‘Today’s discussions reaffirm our commitment to fostering a balanced and progressive partnership with the UAE. We are pleased to have secured operational rights for Nigerian airlines, which will not only strengthen our bilateral ties but also enhance the global competitiveness of Nigeria’s aviation sector. As Emirates returns to Nigeria, we look forward to a thriving and mutually beneficial air service relationship.’

“This advancement follows weeks of diplomatic and technical consultations aimed at reinstating direct air travel between Nigeria and the UAE, underscoring the Federal Government’s commitment to achieving optimal outcomes for both Nigerian and international travelers. The resumption of Emirates flights and the new BASA will be crucial in promoting tourism, business, and cultural exchanges, as well as fostering economic growth between Nigeria and the UAE.”
