‘Enough is enough’ – Wike mocks Atiku, Bala Mohammed, Fubara

The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, has mocked former Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) presidential candidate, Atiku Abubakar, and the Chairman of the PDP Governors Forum, Bala Mohammed, following the Supreme Court ruling against the Rivers State government.

Wike questioned whether Atiku and Mohammed would continue to praise Governor Sim Fubara of Rivers State for disregarding court orders, as they had done in the past, in light of the Supreme Court’s latest judgment.

The Supreme Court ruled that the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) and the Accountant General of the Federation must halt allocations to the Rivers State government until Fubara ceases all illegal, unlawful, and unconstitutional activities. The court further stated that funds would only be released when a lawful Appropriation Law is enacted under the Martin Amaewhule-led Speakership.

In its judgment, delivered by Justice Emmanuel Akomaye Agim, the Supreme Court also ordered the 27 members of the Rivers State House of Assembly to resume their legislative functions immediately.

Reacting to the ruling, Wike said it signified an end to impunity in Rivers State. Speaking at a press conference in Abuja, he remarked:

“These are some of the things we experience in this country—when you speak the truth, people resort to blackmail. But today, we thank God. The apex court has spoken: you have no budget; the Central Bank and Accountant General cannot release funds when there is no proper government. Until the budget is presented to the legitimate assembly—the 27 members—no funds should be disbursed.”

He also criticized Fubara’s actions regarding the conduct of local government elections, saying:

“You refused to comply with the Electoral Act in conducting local government elections. INEC withheld the voters’ register because you failed to comply with court orders, yet you insisted on going ahead, and some Nigerians applauded you. People like Atiku praised him for his actions—I hope they will do the same today. I hope the PDP Governors Forum Chairman will also commend him today.”

Wike emphasized that the Supreme Court’s decision was crucial in protecting democracy, warning against allowing unlawful precedents.

“If this had been allowed, tomorrow, a single member could declare himself an assembly, and there would be nothing anyone could do,” he added.
