The Enugu State Government has responded promptly to a disturbing incident involving Mrs. Ada Ogbogu, who allegedly attacked her young stepson with a pestle, causing severe injuries.
On Saturday, Commissioner for Children, Gender Affairs, and Social Development, Mrs. Ngozi Enih, confirmed that Mrs. Ogbogu, a resident of Sunrise Estate in Emene, was apprehended on Friday and is now in police custody.
“This swift action demonstrates the state government’s commitment to child protection and to ensuring that such incidents will not go unpunished,” Mrs. Enih said. “Enugu State stands firmly against child mistreatment, and this arrest sends a clear message that offenders will face consequences. The government’s dedication to children’s welfare is evident in policies that make Enugu a safer place for all.”
Mrs. Enih further explained, “After receiving a tip-off through a whistleblower on Friday, we worked closely with the police. Although Mrs. Ogbogu was initially not at her residence, we located her at the National Orthopaedic Hospital in Enugu, where the arrest was made with the hospital’s cooperation.”
She also noted that she visited the three-year-old victim at his hospital bedside, where doctors are attending to his broken thigh bone. “It is heart-wrenching to witness such cruelty toward innocent children. Enugu State has zero tolerance for such abuse,” she emphasized.
Governor Peter Mbah has reinforced his commitment to child welfare, vowing that no child in Enugu State should suffer abuse. “This administration has consistently taken action against perpetrators of child abuse, and this case will be no exception following police investigations,” Mrs. Enih affirmed.
In the meantime, First Lady Mrs. Nkechinyere Mbah, deeply concerned by the incident, has pledged to ensure that the young boy receives the necessary medical treatment and that justice is served.
