The Enugu State Police Command has foiled an attempted armed robbery and arrested a suspect near the Agric Bank Bus Stop in Independence Layout, Enugu metropolis.

The development was confirmed in a statement issued on Monday by the Command’s spokesperson, SP Daniel Ndukwe.

According to Ndukwe, operatives responded swiftly to a distress call and apprehended a 28-year-old male suspect, Chimuanya Oshim, while he was allegedly robbing members of the public.

He explained that the suspect was arrested at about 11:30 p.m. on December 13 by officers attached to the Independence Layout Police Division.

“At the scene, operatives caught the suspect in the act of robbing a young man and recovered a revolver-shaped imitation pistol loaded with eight toy bullets,” Ndukwe said.

He added that the suspect is currently in police custody and will be charged to court upon the conclusion of investigations.

The police spokesperson further disclosed that the Commissioner of Police in the state, Mamman Giwa, has charged officers to remain proactive and intensify efforts to rid Enugu of criminal elements.

Ndukwe also called on residents to support security agencies by providing timely and credible information to aid crime prevention and detection.

Meanwhile, the Command recently announced the arrest of six suspected cultists in the state.

Ndukwe said the suspects, who allegedly confessed to belonging to a cult group, were arrested by the Anti-Cultism Unit while attempting to forcibly initiate people into the Supreme Vikings Confraternity.

Items recovered from the suspects include a gun, cutlasses, and alcoholic beverages reportedly meant for the initiation exercise.
