Dutch stalwart and Liverpool defender, Virgil van Dijk, has expressed his enthusiasm for the possibility of captaining the Premier League club in the upcoming season.
With the departure of Jordan Henderson, who held the captaincy, and vice-captain James Milner’s move to Brighton and Hove Albion, the leadership position at Liverpool is now up for grabs.
Van Dijk, a highly respected figure in the squad, is among the top contenders for the role and has already led the team on several occasions in the past. As the anticipation builds over who will don the captain’s armband, the defender acknowledged the significance of such a responsibility.
While the official announcement regarding the captaincy is yet to be made, Van Dijk remains humble, stating, “The captaincy has not been announced yet, so I can’t say much about it. But obviously, I’ve captained the side multiple times already over the last couple of years, and it’s always a proud moment.”
He further expressed that there are several potential leaders within the team, recognizing the depth of leadership qualities among the players. Van Dijk believes that the team boasts numerous individuals who can step up and take on the mantle of leadership.
Last season, Van Dijk showcased his versatility and impact, contributing with three goals and one assist in 32 Premier League appearances.
