Ethical AI can transform African education — Experts

Scholars have emphasized the need for ethical AI adoption to enhance education in Africa while addressing its potential risks.

Speaking at the African School of Economics’ public lecture, Vice-Chancellor Mahfouz Adedimeji and cybersecurity professor Ibrahim Adeyanju highlighted AI’s transformative role in education but stressed the importance of responsible implementation.

Adedimeji noted that AI can personalize learning, analyze student data, and expand access to quality education in remote areas. However, he cautioned that AI must remain a tool under human control to prevent misuse.

Adeyanju, in his keynote lecture, urged African leaders to integrate AI responsibly to tackle challenges like low teacher effectiveness and high out-of-school rates. He advocated for ethical frameworks, digital infrastructure investment, and educator training to ensure AI benefits education.

Both experts warned that without safeguards, AI could pose societal risks. They called on policymakers to establish clear regulations that ensure AI serves as a tool for empowerment rather than control.
