Italy have booked their spot in the Euro 2020 rounds of 16 following their 3-0 triumph over Switzerland at the Olympic Stadium in Rome. Two goals from Sassuolo star Manuel Locatelli and one from Ciro Immobile gave the Azzurri’s their second consecutive triumph in the continental championship this summer.
This victory propels Roberto Mancini’s men to the summit of Group A with six points after their first two games.
Italy got the game started on a bright note as they pressured their opponent in the early minutes of the meeting.
And in the 19th minute, Giorgio Chiellini broke the deadlock with a fine finish but his effort was ruled out by the VAR moments later over handball offense. However, things took a different turn when Locatelli fired the home team ahead in the 26th-minute with Domenico Berardi claiming the assist.
Mancini’s men maintained the one-goal lead for the rest of the opening half and just seven minutes into the second half, Locatelli doubled his side’s lead. The 23-year-old got a timely pass from Nicolo Barella and immediately picked a spot before launching a long-range shot from outside of the 18-yard box which went straight into the back of the net. Of course, the Italians were domineering in most parts of the game as Xherdan Shaqiri and his teammates were not allowed to breathe.
