Gareth Southgate has announced his resignation as the England national team manager following their 2-1 defeat against Spain in EURO 2024.
During his eight-year tenure and 102 games in charge, Southgate became the first manager of the England men’s team to reach two finals, and the first to reach a final outside of England.
The 53-year-old transitioned from managing the U21 team to leading the senior side following Sam Allardyce’s sudden departure in September 2016.
Southgate guided England to the semi-finals of the 2018 World Cup and led the team to the final of Euro 2020, where they lost to Italy on penalties at Wembley. He also took the team to a quarter-final exit at the 2022 World Cup.
Despite his contract with the FA expiring at the end of this year, Southgate had stated in an interview before EURO 2024 that he would step down if he did not win the trophy.
“As a proud Englishman, it has been the honour of my life to play for England and to manage England,” he said. “It has meant everything to me, and I have given it my all. But it’s time for change, and for a new chapter. I’m leaving my role.”
