The former Deputy Speaker of Ebonyi State House of Assembly, Odefa Obasi Odefa, has announced his departure from the opposition Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).
Odefa’s decision to resign from the party was conveyed in a resignation letter addressed to the Chairman of Ogudu Okwor Ward, situated in the Oshiri community within the Onicha Local Government area of the state.
In his resignation letter, Odefa revealed that all the ward executives of the PDP in Onicha local government and Onicha East state constituency had also chosen to resign from the party. He stated, “After a thoughtful discussion with my family and associates, I have chosen to relinquish my membership in the People’s Democratic Party (PDP).”
This move implies the absence of PDP executives or functional executives in the entirety of Onicha East, which encompasses Oshiri, Ukawu, Abaomege, and Ishinkwo communities. Odefa expressed gratitude for the opportunity to serve while he was in the party and extended his best wishes to the PDP.
While Odefa and other defectors did not specify which party they would be joining, it is widely speculated that they are likely to join the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) in the near future.
In a conversation with journalists in Abakaliki, the state capital, Odefa confirmed his defection and emphasized the absence of PDP or functional executives in Onicha East. He was accompanied by prominent figures from both the PDP and the Labour Party (LP) in the local government who also announced their resignations from their respective parties.
Odefa affirmed that his younger brother, who holds the position of National Vice Chairman of the PDP in the South East, was free to remain in the PDP, emphasizing that family members can have differing political affiliations while maintaining mutual respect and understanding within the family.
