Expect new Tor Tiv soon – Ortom

Benue State Governor, Samuel Ortom has given assurance that as soon as he receives and signs the state chieftaincy law recently passed by the State House of Assembly, the process for the enthronement of a new Tor Tiv and other traditional rulers will commence.
Governor Ortom who was accompanied by his wife, Dr Eunice, spoke at St. Mary’s Catholic Church, Gungul, Konshisha Local Government Area, during the interdenominational thanksgiving service and the grand reception in honour of his Special Adviser on Political Affairs, Hon. Saawuan Tarnongu.

The Governor said it became necessary to amend the law which the previous administration apparently intended to favour certain individuals. He said the new law is people-oriented and addresses fundamental issues affecting the traditional institution in the state.

He restated his decision not to interfere with the choice of Tor Tiv and the other chiefs, urging the people to pray so that God would anoint a paramount ruler for the Tiv nation who will lead with His fear and seek to unite rather than create divisions among the people.

Governor Ortom expressed optimism that the current difficult times will not last forever, stating that his administration will continue to give priority to issues which have an immediate impact on the people such as payment of salaries and pensions.

On the issue of the state’s looted funds, the Governor said no amount of blackmail and falsehood could discourage or distract his administration from the drive to recover the stolen money.

He commended Hon. Tarnongu for returning to thank God for the blessing He had upon him and enjoined others who are favoured by the Lord to do same.

Speaking earlier, Hon. Saawuan Tarnongu expressed gratitude to God for his rise to the present position. He also thanked Governor Ortom for finding him worthy to serve the state.

The church service was attended by many personalities including Senator Barnabas Gemade, Speaker, Benue State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. Terkimbi Ikyange, other members of the Legislature as well as members of the State Executive Council.
