Education experts in Nigeria have urged the Federal Government to enact a law backing a comprehensive national Artificial Intelligence (AI) policy. They emphasized the need for clear goals, priorities, and implementation strategies.
The call was part of a communiqué issued at the 2025 AI Awareness Day in Higher Education, a virtual event aimed at promoting AI’s role in transforming education.
The event was co-hosted by the Virtual Institute for Capacity Building in Higher Education (VICBHE), the National Universities Commission (NUC), the National Open University of Nigeria (NOUN), Tertiary Education Trust Fund (TETFund), and other stakeholders.
Experts stressed that AI is reshaping global education and urged Nigeria to prioritize technical skills and ethical awareness in training future leaders. They also called for increased investment in data infrastructure and collaboration between government agencies and AI professionals.
The event featured awards recognizing AI policy, research, curriculum, and application in Nigerian universities, polytechnics, and colleges of education.
February 17 was officially adopted as AI Awareness Day in Nigeria.
