EXPOSED! Meet Nigerian senators who are against the establishment of Peace Corps

By Ben Idah and Vera Enenche

It is no longer news that the Nigerian Senate, yesterday stepped down the bill for the establishment of the youth-friendly Peace Corps of Nigeria.
When Vice Chairman of the committee, Bayero Nafada; moved a motion that the report of the conference committee be considered, some senators from the camp of the PDP strongly kicked against it.

IDOMA VOICE takes a quick look at those senators who are against the establishment of the organization, which tends to create employment for jobless Nigerians, especially the youths.

Ike Ekweremadu
First to throw the salvo was Deputy Senate President, Ike Ekweremadu.
This 54-year-old lawyer representing Enugu West at the Upper Chamber; believed that any move to pass the bill will cause more harm than good. According to Ekweremadu, a matter on Peace Corps is currently at the Court of law where the leadership of the Corps is being tried in a 90-count charge.

James Manager
Another senator, who does not want the bill passed, was James Manager. This Senator representing Delta South Senatorial District on the platform of the PDP also supported Ekweremadu, who had ordered that the bill be step aside.

Emmanuel Bwacha
Emmanuel Bwacha representing Taraba South constituency was also of the opinion that the bill be stepped down, citing the points ealier made by Ekweremadu and Manager.
Bwacha came on board in the April 2011 federal elections on the People’s Democratic Party platform.

Godswill Akpabio
The Senate Minority Leader, Senator Godswill Akpabio of theAkwa Ibom North-West showed stiff opposition to the adoption report of the Conference Committee on the establishment of Nigerian Peace Corps.
The 54-year-old PDP chieftain likened the organization to the controversial ponzi scheme, Mavrodi Mondial Movement (MMM).
Akpabio said the organization was operating illegally and has been involved in unlawful collection of money from applicants. He warned that passing the bill, to legalise NPC would be wrong.

Andy Uba
Senator Emmanuel Nnamdi Uba, or Andy Uba, representing Anambra South constituency also kicked against the Peace Corps. He believes the country might not be needing the organisation.
Kabiru Ibrahim Gaya
Kabiru Ibrahim Gaya of Kano South constituency of Kano State also called for the billed to be step down.
The All Progressive Congress reasoned with the likes of Akpabio.
