The Benue State Commissioner of Police, CP Bartholomew Nnamdi Onyeka, announced that Justice Margaret Igbetar was brutally murdered in her residence in Makurdi on August 24, 2023. This distressing information was disclosed in an official statement released by the Commissioner on a Tuesday.
The Commissioner detailed that immediate action was taken, resulting in the arrest of Aondohemba Joseph, a nephew of the deceased, who was promptly apprehended. During interrogation, Joseph confessed to planning and orchestrating the heinous crime, enlisting the help of others in the sinister act. He led a team of detectives to Adikpo in Kwande Local Government Area, where two more suspects were apprehended: Igbazenda Gbidye, 63 years old, and Dzungwenen Ukor, 40 years old.
The suspects admitted to being accomplices in the plot, revealing that Joseph had informed them of his belief that his late father had left considerable property in the custody of Justice Igbetar. They agreed to join him in the despicable act to secure his claim to the property.
In a disturbing turn of events, Akuhwa Barnabas, a 32-year-old driver employed by the deceased, also confessed to his involvement. He disclosed that he facilitated the gang’s access to the house and manned the gate during the tragic assassination.
CP Onyeka expressed appreciation for the patience and cooperation demonstrated by the people of Benue State. He reassured them that the police command remains dedicated to eradicating crime in the state and will continue to work diligently towards that end.
