A recent debate has arisen in the media following a testimony shared by Vera Anyim at Dunamist Church on Sunday. She claimed to have graduated from the National Open University Nigeria with a Bachelor of Science in Law. Initially unsure, the Senior Pastor, Paul Enenche, advised her to return to her seat, citing that the law faculty does not award a BSC but an LL.B.
However, further investigation reveals that the woman did indeed earn a law degree from the school.
Does National Open University Nigeria Offer a BSC in Law?
Research conducted by IDOMA VOICE on the university’s website indicates that the Faculty of Law at the National Open University of Nigeria was established in February 2004. It was later granted school status in 2007 with the appointment of Prof. Justus A. Sokefun as the Dean.
Information gathered by the reporter states, “The Faculty of Law equips students with the theory and practice of law, the principles of judicial process, legal development, and legislative drafting.
“The LL.B programme provides students with basic legal education to facilitate their admission to the Nigerian Bar, where they may become Solicitors and Advocates of the Supreme Court of Nigeria.”
In a welcome address, it was emphasized that all students of this esteemed Faculty of Law should obtain copies of the handbook to serve as a guide throughout their LL.B program. Ignorance of the law, it was stated, is not an excuse. The Dean, Dr. Ernest O. Ugbejeh, commended the handbook to all students aspiring to become Law graduates and later esteemed members of the legal profession.
Conclusion: Clarification
It is concluded that Vera Ayim’s claim of graduating with a Bachelor of Science in Law from NOUN is incorrect. The university does not offer a BSC in Law; instead, it awards an LL.B degree
