An individual identified as Abawulor Omenka, masquerading as a medical professional, has been apprehended by the Association of Nigerian Private Medical Practitioners while attempting to secure a position as a medical officer at the Covenant University Medical Centre in Ota, located within the Sango area of Ogun State.

Reports indicate that Omenka applied for the role of a Medical Officer and submitted fraudulent credentials, including a photocopy of the Medical and Dental Council of Nigeria (MDCN) registration certificate issued in 2015.

The 35-year-old imposter also presented a certificate from Benue State University, alleging he obtained a Bachelor of Medicine and Surgery with a Second Class Upper Division.

The discovery of his deceit came to light during a job interview held at the Covenant University Medical Centre. During the interview, three doctors scrutinized his credentials, ultimately unearthing discrepancies.

Omenka’s deception was further exposed when he was unable to justify why his MDCN registration number matched those issued decades ago.

According to Punch, an anonymous source disclosed that Omenka confessed to obtaining the fake certificates from illicit operators in Oluwole, Lagos State.

The source stated, “The man first went to Covenant University Health Centre last week to apply for the post of Medical Officer. The MD of the centre, Dr. Ademola Adebanjo, suspected foul play and scheduled him for an interview this week. He then reached out to Dr. Kayode Oyelade, the Chairman of ANPMP, Ogun State chapter about his suspicions. So Dr. Oyelade and Dr. Akin Oyejoko, an executive of the association sat in the interview panel yesterday to be able to get to the root of the matter. That was how he was nabbed.”

Dr. Kayode Oyelade, Chairman of the Association of Private Medical Practitioners in Ogun State, confirmed the incident. Oyelade stated that Omenka was caught during the interview due to his limited knowledge of the medical profession and discrepancies in his presented credentials.

The association’s management further elucidated that the protest was not directly linked to the student’s death and explained that steps were being taken to address the issues raised about the clinic.

Oyelade added that Omenka had been handed over to the police and that the association would ensure he faces legal consequences as a deterrent.

Chairman of the Nigerian Medical Association, Ogun State Chapter, Dr. Azim Kunle Ashimi, advised hospitals to exercise vigilance when hiring medical staff and emphasized the commitment to eliminating quackery within the state.
