FCT Police announce security measures for October 1 celebrations

The Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Police Command has assured Abuja residents of a secure and peaceful Independence Day celebration on October 1.

In a statement issued on Monday by the Command’s Public Relations Officer, SP Josephine Adeh, the police affirmed that adequate personnel and equipment have been strategically deployed across the capital ahead of Nigeria’s 64th Independence Day festivities.

The deployment includes Explosive Ordinance Disposal (EOD) units, anti-riot equipment, and visible policing to ensure the smooth conduct of events. The statement also mentioned that traffic diversions would be implemented in areas expected to host large crowds, such as the Central Area and Eagle Square.

SP Adeh urged residents to stay vigilant and report any suspicious activities to the FCT Police through emergency lines.

This security assurance comes as some Nigerians plan to hold a #FearlessOctober1 protest against the economic hardship caused by government policies, including the removal of fuel subsidies and the naira devaluation.

IDOMA VOICE earlier reported that organizers of the protest have vowed that the demonstration will proceed, despite potential opposition from the police, Department of State Services (DSS), and military.

The protest organizers have also written to the Inspector General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, requesting security measures for the safety of participants, asserting that the right to peaceful protest is fundamental and must not be suppressed.
