FCTA Demolishes Illegal Structures in Lugbe, Abuja
Officials from the Federal Capital Territory Administration (FCTA) conducted a demolition operation on Monday, clearing illegal structures situated on land owned by the Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) in the Lugbe area of Abuja. The land was intended for other infrastructure development.
Mr. Mukhtar Galadima, Director of the Department of Development Control, FCTA, addressed the media after the exercise, clarifying that the area, known as Timber Shield Market, was not authorized for construction. It was illegally occupied by timber dealers, scavengers, and vendors of low-value items, despite being located under a high-tension power line.
The TCN had awarded a contract for the energization of the power line, necessitating the removal of the illegal structures before work could commence. Additionally, the area served as a corridor for Ring Road III, connecting Gwarimpa and the Public Service Institute along Onex and linking Siraji to the Apo Mechanic area.
Mr. Galadima emphasized that the demolition operation is part of an ongoing initiative to clear all illegal structures across Abuja City. Prior to the demolition, multiple notices were issued to the illegal occupiers, followed by meetings with traders and key stakeholders to discuss the relocation plans.
