FG cancels military parade for 2025 Democracy Day

The Federal Government has announced the cancellation of the traditional military parade previously scheduled to mark Nigeria’s 26th Democracy Day on Thursday, June 12, 2025.
According to the Inter-Ministerial Committee on the Democracy Day celebration, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu will instead deliver a nationwide broadcast at 7 a.m. on Thursday, replacing the usual ceremonial parade held in past years.
As part of the revised Democracy Day programme, President Tinubu is also expected to attend a special joint session of the National Assembly at 12 noon. The session will focus on the state of the nation, Nigeria’s democratic progress, and the need for continued unity and institutional reform.
Later in the day, a public lecture is scheduled for 4 p.m. at the State House Conference Centre in Abuja. The event will bring together government officials, political leaders, and civil society representatives to reflect on the theme: “Consolidating on the Gains of Nigeria’s Democracy: Necessity of Enduring Reforms.”
The Federal Government is encouraging citizens to tune in to the president’s broadcast and participate in the ongoing national dialogue aimed at strengthening Nigeria’s democratic institutions.
